The Simplicity of a Checkers Piece
No matter how much thought is put into the rules of a strategy game, the game will never catch on with the public if the design and look of the game is awful. Now, many people feel that overly creatively input into the design of the pieces of the game will equate to popularity, but this is not always the case. Many times, the simpler the look of the game, the more appeal it will have. Sometimes, it seems that the lesser the better. Who would think that a little piece of plastic like a checkers piece would be representative of a much larger creative process? That is, a simple, tiny checkers piece does not inspire the awe of a handcrafted chess piece. This is unfortunate as checkers can easily be as complex a game as chess is, but because of checkers’ relatively simply design and construction, people have a tendency to not award it the respect that other board games are offered. Sometimes even very silly board games such as Battleship receive more respect. That is quite a shame since those games’ rules make virtually every move a predetermined response due to the nature of the game itself as opposed to a serious strategy employed by a player as is the case with checkers. A checkers piece may be small in size, but its usage should not be just limited to game of checkers. By using some of your creativity and innovation, it should not be difficult to think of other ways to play the checkers pieces. One of them is to use them in a mini table soccer game where the checkers pieces can be the “soccer players”. By setting up a goal post at the end of the table, you can start to enjoy a miniature game of soccer with your friends or relatives, without having to buy a whole new of equipment. Furthermore, you can even use the checkers pieces as a substitute for your carom seeds should you have some missing ones. Thus, checkers pieces indeed are very useful and versatile despite their unappealing appearances. The normal checkers piece is either red or black, although sometimes the red checkers piece is replaced with a white checkers piece. The pieces are almost always uniformly circular in design and there is relatively little creativity in making variants of the traditional checkers piece. This is not to say that there are never any variants, but the sheer volume of variants pales greatly in comparison to the variants present in chess. (That is, one would have to look pretty hard to find a Civil War themed checkers game!) No matter, checkers is what it is and has been successful for centuries, so why change it?
