The Longevity of the Checkers Board Game

Defined Tag:

It would be fairly impossible to live anywhere in the world under any cultural influence and not be familiar with the checkers board game. Along with chess and backgammon, the checkers board game is easily the most recognizable strategy game in history. Keep in mind the word ‘history’ does not refer to the last hundred years. Checkers has been around a lot longer than that!

The game of Checkers has a long history which begun at an archaeological dig site in Iraq. According to historical records, the game that was unearthed was close to 3,000 years old. Later, a similar game was discovered in Egypt and the age of the unearthed game appeared to be 1,500 years old. It is believed that these games were later modified by the French to be played on a chess board during the middle ages. Thus, this is beginning of the “modern” version of the checkers board game. Since then, the checkers game gradually spread to different countries, outside of France. More importantly, the popularity of the Checkers game lasted through the different centuries, even till the present one.

Apart from being a tremendous game, Checkers has had its own following that has survived for thousands of years. This can be attributed to the simplicity of the Checkers game, which will appeal to people who are looking for a more relaxed and fun game. For instance, small children probably would have a hard time grasping the complexity of chess so the relatively simple game of checkers becomes far more preferred. The same theory also applies to those who have only limited patience to learn a new game. In less than five minutes, you will be to grasp the rules of Checkers and start playing the game with your friends. The game is really that easy and simple to master!

Whether one played a checkers board game in the 12th century or one is playing the game today, the appeal of checkers transcends any culture and time period. That is why the game has been around so many, many years and will continue to remain on the board game market for many more years to come. Granted, some of the electronic variants on the classical checkers board game may offend purists, but it is simply the continuation of checkers’ evolution, an evolution that has been ongoing for 5,000 years. With the introduction of the online version of Checkers, it is not difficult to predict that the popularity of the game will be further increased and lasting for another 50 years or more!
