Checkers Rules Defined

Defined Tag:

The game of checkers may appear to be easy to learn but the rules are a bit more complicated that a novice would believe. While the game looks no more complicated than simply moving the pieces across a small board, the reality is that if the game was really that simple, it would become insanely boring. Checkers would have ended up like Tic Tac Toe where people play the game, but do not even remotely take the play of the game or the game’s outcome even remotely serious.

Learning the basics rules of the checkers game will not take a long time, and in fact the learning curve is quite smooth. Take some time to understand the below mentioned rules and you will find yourself enjoying the game within a matter of hours.

In the usual game settings, the black pieces have the priority to make the first move. In addition, there is a five minute time limit between moves, but outside a competition setting, this checkers rule is usually disregarded. As for moving rules, checkers pieces must move diagonally and jumping over an opposing piece eliminates that piece from the game. A player can only jump a piece that is directly next to the ‘jumping’ piece; when a piece lands at the far end of the opposing player’s side of the board, the piece becomes a “king” noted by stacking a second piece on top of it; a king can move backwards as well as forwards. In order to end a game, a player has to capture all of the opposing players pieces or leave the opposing player with no more moves to make.

Furthermore, there are also other variants to this popular game. Some people have drastically changed checkers rules to the point the game they are playing has only a passing resemblance to the original game. There is nothing wrong with this as it makes the game interesting and allows the continual growth of checkers. By modifying the original checkers rules, people who may not have normally been interested in the game may find themselves attracted to the game by being intrigued by the variant checkers rules. Personally, I have found checkers to be an intriguing, fascinating and challenging game. It not only provides you with hours of entertainment, but it also helps to train up your analytical skills without you knowing it!
